Masala Chai (Masala Tea) is a traditional South Asian spiced tea made by brewing black tea with a blend of aromatic spices, milk, and a sweetener. The word masala means “spice blend,” and chai simply means “tea.”
Useful Properties
Many of the potential benefits come from the spices as well as the black tea.
- Rich in antioxidants: Black tea contains polyphenols that help protect cells from oxidative stress.
- May support digestion: Ginger, cardamom, and fennel are traditionally used to ease digestion and reduce bloating.
- May provide anti-inflammatory effects: Ginger and cinnamon contain natural compounds with anti-inflammatory properties.
- Boosts alertness: Black tea provides moderate caffeine, typically around 30–60 mg per cup.
- May support immune health: Spices like ginger, cloves, and cinnamon contain plant compounds with antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.
- Comforting and warming: The spice blend can create a soothing, warming sensation, especially in cooler weather.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, moisture, and strong odors. Reseal the package tightly after each use to maintain its distinctive bergamot aroma and freshness.
Shelf Life: Up to 24 months from the production date when unopened and stored properly. For the best flavor and aroma, consume within 6–12 months after opening.
